THE QUARTERMASTER'S REVENGE

Hi Chris,

Re: the White House has "dramatically reduced the number of Abrams tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles in Iraq,"

This statement seems to be misleading. From all my research, I believe it to be the case that the tanks and Bradley vehicles are still in Iraq, but that they are immobilized because replacement parts are severely backlogged.

The composite steel and rubber tracks that these vehicles use are prone to rapid deterioration in the desert conditions of Iraq. The manufacturers can't get replacement tracks to Iraq quickly enough to keep the vehicles mobile.

Off the top of my head, these vehicles were being employed at a rate of travel about 10-15 times what the Army procurement officers had anticipated as of 2002. Thus, we have a huge fortune invested in stuff that just doesn't work due to a lack of spare parts.

As one of my partners used to put it, "we got a dollar waitin' on a dime."
