"I applauded when you said in your press conference last night that you couldn't think of a single mistake you'd made. It must make the burdens of leadership easier to bear if you never have any doubts."

This was an unfortunate event, and represents the worst combination of "gotcha" journalism and Bush's "Deer in the Headlights" inability to communicate at times.

It is clear that Bush is not great "on his feet". But, is this the measure of man's ability? I think not. It is but one component, and frankly, the strength of Bush's "surefootedness" outweighs by a million times the weakness of his sluggishness "on his feet". We've had some presidents who second-guess their own decisions and try to run the nation by taking polls, and I find the "deer in the headlights" response much preferable to this kind of weak leadership.

I'm certain that, in an appropriate forum, Bush could have come up with a number of responses to the question (I would argue the big-spending Teddy Kennedy Wasted Money Education Bill would be one of them).

In fairness, I seriously doubt a question even remotely like that has ever been asked in a presidential press conference.
