I agree with your concerns about free trades on Nasdaq at Web Street. Their profit has to come from somewhere. I don't see any limitation on the type of order, e.g. only on market orders and a different rate for limit orders. If that's the case, then the only way they can cover cost is to have less than timely execution to get a spread between your limit and the market. That'll leave you behind the market with the possibility of not getting filled. Someone has to pay the bills.

There is one very slim possibility: they may be combining orders with in-house trades. Still, the person working the desk wants to get paid, so... ???
