Amy, The CEO of GM recently said something rather elegant, but to paraphase his comments: by taxing gas, the govt would align our customer's goals with society's goals towards less gas consumption. GM can't stop making SUVS, unless their customers desire cost-efficient products more than gas guzzlers.

Sounds really stupid, if that's what the CEO of GM really said. Imagine if the CEO of Altria (formerly Philip Morris) said, "We can't stop making cigarettes, unless our customers stop buying them." Or a drug lord saying, "We can't stop selling our drugs, unless our customers stop buying them."

I don't want to draw too big an analogy between SUVs and narcotics, but if you think Americans are addicted to oil, then you wouldn't be accepting the comments of the GM CEO as genuine.
