I think that one of his problems is that he has been giving political speeches too long. It is easy to just let the auto-pilot kick in. Bush had the opposite problem last time. Because he passed on a lot of the early debates, he was not comfortable campaigning on a national stage at the time of the New Hampshire primary. I remember seeing video of him on the streets of New Hampshire trying to connect with people on the day before the primary. He looked like the proverbial deer caught in the headlights. He is still sometimes ill at ease but at least he knows how to work around it.

The other problem that Kerry has is that he is trying to shift some of his positions more toward the center. While his mind knows what it is doing, his tongue views it as an unnatural act and reacts accordingly.
