My dad couldn't get me into the National Guard ahead of everybody else on the waiting list. Not that my dad would have, he believed strongly that I should succeed on my own merits, without his help, and that that would make me a better and more self-reliant and compassionate person. He was right. So, I had to avoid Vietnam by more conventional means. I took acid and did some amphetamine before my pre-induction physical. Got on the group W bench. Asked the shrink why she wanted me to kill babies. Got that magic 4-F! A few years later, they would have taken me anyway. Out of 60 of us, only three were determined not to go. The rest were gung ho or meek sheep to the slaughter.
