I'm just going by memory of stuff I've read years ago, but I think there was a discussion about a demonstration bomb.
I think we only had the two bombs at the time, and I'm not sure how long before the next came along. I suppose that they were worried about not having enough" bombs, plus the danger if the demo didn't work.


That's pretty much the way I remember it. Though the demonstration failure was only relevant if there was a pre-announcement.

The first bomb must have been received as What the hell happened? There was no point of reference for the Japanese to understand the damage that could result from a single bomb. If there wasn't a war going on, it could have been interpreted as a medium-large sized meteor hit. Even with the radiation burns and sickness, who would know?

It's an academic argument. We did what we did. And there's no way to know what would have changed had we done something different.
