It's certainly possible to believe in both evolution and creation. That's a false dichotomy.

For Christians and Jews - maybe Muslims, too, not sure - the difficulty lies in whether the six days described in Genesis were 24 hour days like we have here on Earth, or something more metaphoric.

People who believe that God created the Universe and everything in it in six literal 24 hour days, and specially created Adam from dust and Eve from one of his ribs ("Special Creation") typically also believe that the Earth is no older than five or six thousand years ("Young Earth Creationism".)

But, according to the Pope and other theologians, there's no reason you can't believe that God created the Universe maybe 15 billion years ago, and created evolving life on Earth maybe 4 billion years ago.
