I missed the first ten minutes or so of the Bush/religion Frontline, assume at least some of it was about historical presidents/precedent and Bush's hell-raising youth. When I tuned in, he had already converted and was assisting his dad run's for President.
For me, there wasn't enough meat to it to make me feel like I had learned enough, but it was intriguing. My sense is that Bush, like most religious Christians I've met in America, goes about it in a sort of ad hoc way.
Interesting coincidence that yesterday Nancy Pelosi said she will continue to take communion, even though the Catholic heirarchy says that because she is a pro-choice activist, she should not. Again, there is a sort of ad hoc quality there - she listens to her own conscience, not the established Catholic church.
I was somewhat disappointed that there was no balance to the man who said that Bush's us vs. evil speech was "bad theology" -- I disagree. We may not be 100% good, but we can still say that deliberately targetting civilians for death is evil.
That opens up a can of worms - (Hiroshima?) - and maybe we don't want to go there - but it's not "bad theology." But really getting into that would take many, many hours, no way to wrap it up in neat sound bites in an hour. |
