I think you are really underestimating the power of those images.

They couldn't be more insulting to the Arab male. And what does it look like to Europeans? We have the new image of the US soldier, smiling, giving a thumbs up, while prisoner are forced to sodomize each other. As unfair as that is, it's an image that sticks. Marketing 101, Obl loves it.

One of the US taboos is what wars do to unprepared, sheltered American kids. Kerry talked about it wrt Vietnam, and has been vilified by the right ever since. We are pampered, and frankly a percentage of us don't deal well with the killing and devaluation of human life.

This is huge. Those photo's are recruiting posters for every terrorist group. The non-Muslim world is saying "I told you so", and how do you argue with that?

It's easy in this country to say it was a few deranged individuals. But in many countries, to many people, that's the new image of the American soldier.

It's a really bad thing. It sticks in peoples minds.
