I don't think it's anything to do with ideology, but pragmatism.

That's my sense of the motivation, as well. But motivation, while interesting, doesn't matter much. It's the result that counts. And the result is that he has lent credence to centralized government programs and centralized control, something that used to be anathema to conservatives. The genie is now out of the bottle. I don't know how we recover from that. The fight now becomes not WHETHER we have big, centralized government programs but rather which side gets to dictate the values and the beneficiaries. I think that's a pretty big principle to discard and I am in mourning over it. I don't think pragmatism justifies abandoning it.
