Well, I'd say the difference is in the nature of the organization. McDonalds is a formalized, legal entity. Informal syndicates like drug networks are based on personal relationships. Much of the power and efficacy of such networks are based on interpersonal trust and loyalty, not mere contract and transaction. They are tribal, not corporate. Rule by personality, not by law. IMO.

If you kill the kingpin, you disrupt the feudal network of trust and dependence. The successor may not have the network of contacts and relationships of trust and influence to keep the network intact.
