My guess is that the reason humans tend to put faith into the man in charge is that this is part of a general reflex to respond submissively to authority, at least when we're not actually rebelling against it (which means, for most of us, finding another leader). In our violent past, those who failed to recognize authority and kowtow to it were culled from the herd.

We are a pack animal, and pack animals must recognize a hierarchy. I've felt the emotional tendency myself. It is very hard to tell the boss to his face that he's an idiot, even when it is well known and commented upon behind his back. The times I've done it, other people look at me like I've lost my mind.
