The midnight raids to abduct people out of their homes to be taken to the torture centers must be a primary irritant. So is the rounding up of hostages from clans to guarantee obedience from their towns. The only way to break the pattern is for the original offender to apologize and pay damages. The US president is not about to apologize for lying about wmd. His VP is not going to apologize for lying about alqaeda links. And his war planners are not going to apologize about killing 20,000 people. So the cycle will keep going. But more basically, the primary purpose of invading Iraq was to remove any possibility of support to palestinians. Carl's thesis should be extended to say that the US cannot leave abruptly, because then Iraq will continue to be a place that is hostile to Israel. And the appearance of US defeat will embolden nationalists in Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. If one of those regimes fell, then it gets more difficult for the Israelis. So since the Israeli lobby will try to keep the US in Iraq. That will be the true unfolding of Carl's thesis. That will inflame the real nationalist resistance. The only out is whether Iraq can be made a friend of the west. Or alternatively, whether the resistors can be suppressed with continuous killings. The Israelis are opting for the killings in their occupation. Whether the US will follow them or not I don't know. Sarmad
