Several strands came together. Oil is one of them. So is removing a troublesome opponent of Israel. And the desire to have bases in a centrally located country. And if all these could be accomplished in a way that reflected well on the US, and improved life in Iraq, so much better. But if all these good goal didn't work out, well at least the US will make a demonstration of the consequences of disobeying the US.
