Jeff Jarvis is right about the BBC. What's with the scare quotes around the word "escaped"? Are they so jaded they can no longer recognize good news when they see it? Or so cynical they don't believe it? I mean, just what's wrong with those people?

AP - BAGHDAD, Iraq - American hostage Thomas Hamill, kidnapped three weeks ago in an insurgent attack on his convoy, was found by U.S. forces Sunday south of Tikrit after he apparently escaped from his captors

BBC - US hostage 'escapes' in Iraq

The way you convey the fact that you don't have all the facts and haven't confirmed the story is to say, as the AP did, and as General Kimmitt did, is that he "apparently escaped." It communicates a lack of complete information, while the BBC method communicates that you distrust the story. Subtle differences matter. They don't matter enormously, but over time, they do pile up.
