China plans satellite aid

China will launch a satellite next May to help monitor construction, traffic and the environment in Beijing ahead of the 2008 Olympics, the Xinhua news agency said on Sunday. The 100 kg (220 lb) satellite will be the fifth of seven orbiters in the International Disaster Relief Network, Xinhua said.

The project will cost 190 million yuan ($23 million).

"The satellite will provide direct and scientific proof for the government to make decisions and supervise issues of environmental protection, urban construction, disasters and traffic conditions," it quoted Wang Zhiyong, an expert with the project, as saying.

Beijing is starting work this year on 11 gymnasiums and four facilities, including the Olympic Village, for the 2008 summer Games.

Last year it began building a new national stadium and swimming centre.
