NEW GEOLOGICAL MAPS PROMOTE MINING EXPLORATION
VICTORIA – The Ministry of Energy and Mines has released new geological maps of mineralized areas in three significant areas of the province to attract new mineral exploration and mining development and create new jobs.
“The release of these new geological maps demonstrates government’s commitment to improve the province’s geoscience database for prospectors and industry. The high-quality maps will help drive new investment in mineral exploration,” said Minister of Energy and Mines Richard Neufeld. “These latest geological mapping products are particularly timely and will assist mineral exploration and investment as we enter a new mineral exploration field season.”
The new geological maps cover areas of the Toodoggone region, site of the Kemess Mine; the Iskut-Eskay region, site of the Eskay Creek Mine; and the Barkerville area, which is host to numerous gold occurrences. The surveys were funded and carried out in cooperation with the Geological Survey of Canada and industry partners.
“These new maps will generate additional interest in exploration throughout the north and further stimulate an already surging mining sector,” says Minister of State for Mining Pat Bell. “Exploration expenditures have doubled from $25 million to $55 million since 2001 and we expect to see an even greater increase in exploration spending this year. Improving our geoscience database is part of government’s action agenda for mining and will restore mining’s economic potential and generate new investment, jobs and opportunities for mining families throughout B.C.
“The production and distribution of geological data is the foundation of mineral exploration investment in any jurisdiction” said Dan Jepsen, Executive Director BC and Yukon Chamber of Mines. “The Chamber fully supports the government’s efforts to develop partnerships that lead to new geological data, and the interest this data will create in B.C. mineral exploration investment. This is part of the good news story for B.C. mineral exploration”.
The Toodoggone map results from geoscience partnerships with Bishop Resources Inc., Finlay Minerals Ltd., Northgate Exploration Ltd., Sable Resources Ltd., Stealth Minerals Ltd., and the B.C. Geological Survey, the Geological Survey of Canada, and the University of British Columbia. The Eskay map is a product of the $1.64 million Targetted Geoscience Initiative with the Geological Survey of Canada, and the Barkerville map is a product of a partnership with International Wayside Gold Mines Ltd.
These geological maps will be made available to the public through the ministry website at em.gov.bc.ca and hardcopies will be available through Crown Publications Inc. in Victoria www.crownpub.bc.ca/ |
