It's political. Both Bush and Kerry will be falling all over themselves trying to get the South Florida Cuban vote, which is currently ~30% undecided. If one or the other guy can get that block, then (probably) they get Florida.

I would like to see them do away the electoral college system. It seems to lead to pandering to small special interest groups, and also increase the pork to large states vs. smaller states. It would eliminate the election debacle of 2000, except in the unlikely event of a tie in the popular vote.

Is being "tough" on Castro in our national best interests? Maybe, maybe not. But no Presidential candidate is going to cross the Miami Cubans.
