But for argument sake, suppose that Iraqis vote in Jan 2005 for the platforms/candidates to get the US out of Iraq. Are you predicting that the US will ignore it and remain in Iraq?

If it's a free and fair election, including Shiites, Sunnis, and Kurds, then we'd have no choice but to abide by their wishes... We'd be stupid not to leave.

But I opine that the persistent distrust between the various factions will continue to make an international presence necessary.

We're talking beans and bullets here.. The Iraqis have been spending billions on bullets under the Baathist regime, and I anticipate that there will be severe pressure from the street to spend more on beans.

And they have $18 Billion reasons to desire a continued US presence.

And there's the reality that they live in a very hostile neighborhood, where they have everyone hoping they never achieve unify as Iraqis.
