Coalition accepts resignation of Iraq human rights minister

Monday..May 3 2004

BAGHDAD (AFP) - The US-led coalition has accepted the resignation of Iraq (news - web sites)'s human rights minister, Abdel Basset Turki, who quit his post on April 8 in anger over US military offensives on Fallujah and Najaf.

"The resignation was accepted Sunday by the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA)," ministry spokesman Jihad Zair told AFP on Monday.

The US-dominated CPA has cited human rights as a motivating factor in the invasion last spring to oust the authoritarian regime of Saddam Hussein (news - web sites).

The coalition demanded human rights protections be inserted into the transitional law that is expected to govern Iraq until a permanent constitution is drafted by the end of 2005.

But the scenes of intense street fighting when US forces assaulted Fallujah on April 5 on the hunt for insurgents who brutally murdered four US contractors day before triggered revulsion among pro-coalition Iraqis.

Since the weekend, the United States has been rocked by a human rights scandal in Iraq, with the publication by media outlets of photos of US soldiers abusing and sexually humiliating Iraqi detainees.
