east I doubt if Palestinians are the best educated Arab nation. Iraq, despite its myriad ills, was a place with education available to all (women and men), in line with to its socialist style government.

"Among all Muslim states", on the other hand, Palestinians cannot be the best educated, as that includes places like Turkey with eight years mandatory education and zillions of high schools and universities.


I can't remember where I saw the quote. I just did a quick search to see what literacy rates are in the ME.

There wasn't a rate for the West Bank but there was one for Jordan whose population is 60% Palestinian. According to the WHO, in 1995, it was 86% whereas it was 82% in Turkey and 58% in Iraq. In the last 20 years, I think Iraq's middle class has lost a lot of ground. With Turkey, I think the large Kurd population probably lags the general Turk population.

I will see if I can find the quote I read re. the Palestinians.........assuming I did read such a quote.
