What does it mean when people say "I love my country"?

You hear this expression pretty often, and I have no idea what it is supposed to mean.

Generally when I think of "love," I think of people. I can say I love many members of my family and some of my friends. To some extent I can also see loving a pet, though I haven't had a pet relationship go that far, I would say "extremely fond" is as far as I go.

I can't see loving an inanimate object. If there has been an object I loved, it is probably my 1971 Schwinn Orange Krate bicycle.

As far as loving my country, that is a very tall task. It is a BIG country, I've only been to maybe 1/500 of 1% of it, and have met probably less than 1/100 of 1% of its people. I'm supposed to fall in love with that? What if I meet the other 99.998% of the people and don't like them?

A redneck threatened me for no reason in a Boone, N.C. pizzeria once, and as a consequence I don't love Boone. Does that mean I am only capable of loving 99.9999999% of my country?

Some people have been said to love their country so much they died for it. I think it was really their friends and families they died for, I can't see anyone dying for that pizzeria in Boone, N.C.

I think this whole "I love my country" thing is a load of crap.
