ST. PAUL - The day before his biggest ad buy yet starts in Minnesota and 18 other states, presidential hopeful John Kerry rolled into the state to court voters and build more local support.

"I think every state is important," he said early Monday on Minnesota Public Radio. "This is a critical race. When you're running against an incumbent, it's always harder."

The Democratic candidate was scheduled to speak at the Minneapolis Convention Center - the same place President Bush spoke to a group of community college leaders a week earlier.

Ticket prices for the Kerry reception started at $35 for students and included a performance by Carole King. The legendary singer/songwriter headlined a fund-raiser last month in St. Louis that brought in $600,000 - about $2,000 from each of the 300 guests. King also has been campaigning door-to-door for Kerry.

Kerry was hoping to raise $500,000 from the Minneapolis event.

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak, a former Howard Dean supporter, said small contributions were fueling Kerry's campaign across the country.

"This is a very energized state. ... Kerry's base is wildly energized," Rybak said.
