I'm worried about the counter argument which is that we don't really know since this is the first time anyone has tried to define their opponent this early. I wasn't paying attention in 96 when Bubba did it, so I don't know the date he started on Dole. Kerrys numbers after the ads started dropped significantly. At a time when Bush was taking hits. Either the ads worked, or Kerry's campaigning backfired. I think Kerry killed himself with the "I voted for it before I voted against it" clip. I saw it again today. The Bushfolk will run it right though the election.
