By the way, I went through a "special processing" when I turned myself in after taking a two week "leave extension" that the army considered AWOL. A lot of the guys were there for more serious military crimes. Part of the "processing" involved entering a basement with about 12 MPs and 8-10 naked men sitting at attention on benches. Most of them were blubbering and sobbing with running noses and tear-wet faces.
....
Every one of those MPs was a sadist. No one but a sadist would have done that kind of duty. I know the army knew it was going on ....

Judging by Faultline's reply to you and everyone else's silence, I would guess that people don't believe your post. As Carl likes to say, people pretty much believe what they want to believe, and they almost always want to believe or at least pretend that they are aligned with "good" guys and the other guys who oppose them are "bad" guys.

but did they "screw up" by abusing prisoners or was it mostly the getting caught thing that was the screw up?

They screwed up by getting caught, but they REALLY screwed up by taking pictures. If they hadn't taken pictures, they would have just denied everything, no matter how many Iraqis complained about their treatment. No one would believe the Iraqis. They would have been called Baathists (make that a loooonnnng Baaaaaa...). If Al Jazeera would have reported it, Bush would have used it as an example of how they lie to turn people against the US.

Seymour Hersh was just on Charlie Rose. He said, look, they did the same kind of thing to John Walker Lindh in the first week after they captured him, you think they're going to treat Iraqis differently?

I believe your story. I believe Hersh. I do NOT believe that this behavior was particularly aberrant in this prison. No way would they have taken pictures if it was all that aberrant. And it likely is not uncommon in other prisons either. But most people aren't stupid enough to take pictures.
