SAN FRANCISCO--Amid price cuts for flash-memory cards in the marketplace, digital camera shipments from Japan were 4.2 million in the first quarter of 2004, up 71 percent over the like period a year ago, according to RBC Capital Markets.

RBC projects the Japanese digital camera market will hit 75 million units in 2004, up 39 percent from 2003. Japanese vendors account for an estimated 80 percent of global digital camera shipments.

"With >4 megapixel (MP) cameras now accounting for 49 percent of total shipments exiting Q1, we continue to expect 512MB cards will be the sweet spot in the retail sector in 2004," according to RBC, an investment banking firm in San Francisco.

"Notably 5MP cameras now account for 24 percent exiting Q1 compared to 10 percent for Q1:03. In addition, SanDisk has initiated price cuts in Q2 to accelerate this conversion. Notably, we are already beginning to see 512MB cards for $50-100 in the retail channel," according to the firm
