How would you like to be in the army today, with the war on the cheap

I would love to be in the Army today. I was the 100th retired SFer to call Ft Bragg on 9/11 and volunteer for recall. None of us were recalled...several took instructor positions at the Special Warfare Center and School.

I have personally spoken with members of the first two A teams that inserted into Afghanistan. At another function I spoke with Col Cleveland and his CSM...Together with 40 A teams they ran the entire N front of the war in Iraq after the 4th ID did not make it in. They had everything they wanted and needed to fight. Ditto for the Marines. My Niece, Mary Kate, a USMC Sgt, was with the MEU that attacked along the right flank from Kuwait to Baghdad. She told me (in response to emails asking her if she needed anything) the food sucked but they had everything they needed. She confirmed this after returning. Ditto for my Nephew Charlie, a USAF Captain. Charlie was at a party in my home last Christmas. He has been to Afghan and Iraq. He says they have everything they need.
Could they use more vests? apparently, and that is being addressed. But that problem could be quickly solved by making them optional for front line troops, then there would be plenty for the REMFs too. Most of the guys leading would ditch their helmets and vests in a minute if they could. The damn things are heavy, bulky, cumbersome and get in the way. Most Infantrymen would rather carry more ammo.

Certainly Kerry would not say this war is on the cheap. For 20 years, he voted against all the expensive systems, equipment and weapons that enabled our rapid advance and held our initial losses to about 100...far less than the doomsday casualty figures some politicians were predicting.

Mike the situation in the prison is just awful. The behavior of some of our troops was reprehensible. Mistakes were made...they are being corrected. that is what we do in these circumstances. Our Armed Forces are a reflection of our society. We have a criminal element in every town in America and likewise we have always had a criminal element in our Armed Forces. The Army is very good at rooting these folks out. The Criminal Investigation folks are highly trained and very thorough. This situation will be handled properly.

If you are correct that the loss of 1200 GIs will taint the will of the American people in the WOT, we are in trouble. I expect our losses to go much higher.
