my thinking is in line with most of that post.

My draft number was 4 during Viet Nam. I appealed the decision to the draft board and refused to go. This was primarily because I knew of a great deal of criminal behavior that was being excused by my peers who claimed it was somebody elses fault. No way, you do the deed, it is on your soul. I did not want to get caught up in tragic situations where I would have to go against my military colleages, so I refused to go at all...but that's just me.

The "Just following orders" excuse will not fly. The perps need to be held directly accountable. If their were higher ups condoning or even indirectly encouraging this behavior their heads need to roll as well. The General seems to me to be someone who got promoted beyond her own competence, probably because of internal politics but who knows. She can not use her own neglectful behavior as an excuse.

I don't watch sports because spectating is boring, and the arena mentallity offends me. I love to compete on a personal level however.

The football star is being held up as a recognizable example of noble character. I find nothing wrong with that. Less famous people who have made this kind of sacrifice are identified via the spectacle as well by all the fooforahhh. That's what making an example out of someone is all about.

'Do we have our priorities screwed up or what.'

Societal priorities can only be a loose and general representation of the people of that society.

'How shallow of a Nation have we become?'

Good point. Individuals who vacate their unique soul centered foundation of principle to become cheerleaders for some agenda are sadly very shallow and transparent. I vote for thoughtful and balanced discussion here that is based on individual perspectives...rather than agendas.
