<<<It is true, as you say, that "troops equate to a greater ability to provide security." But, and follow me carefully here, the problem lies in the fact that we have a greater need to "provide security," not in the fact that we can do it. What I'm saying is that when things deteriorate to the point where the insurgency has gathered a strong minority of the population's support and the rest of the population is not spilling their blood to fight it, YOU'VE ALREADY LOST.>>>

Your assumption here is that the Iraqis that count, that are trying to form a government and own homes and businesses will be unable to improve security.

The insurgents are going to be in the doghouse, getting more Iraqis killed and causing destruction of what
"right minded" Iraqis are trying to build. The action in Fallugha brought the clerics and IGC into the city to say, no doubt, that their actions were unwelcome and that they were ruining their own chances of participating fully in the new government.

There will be a new Government, without question, and we have yet to know how successful it will be.

I happen to think the Iraqi government can do the job with our support and that they are beginning to recognize they need to do the job themselves. If they cannot then we need to know that too and perhaps change direction.
