I understand your analogy, but I do not agree it is an
appropriate one.

First, in the span of one week there has been considerably
more mainstream media coverage of the prisoner abuse story
than the sum total of all the good things we have done in
Iraq in more than a year. While I agree that this one bad
deed should receive wide coverage, the disparity is
seriously disproportionate. That is not only wrong, it is
harmful in the misperceptions it creates.

Second, this bad deed will be appropriately punished. It
will be done openly & there will be changes/imporvements
to make it less likely to be repeated.

Besides, if one bad deed done by the worlds only superpower
"wipes out a lifetime of good", then there is absolutely
no reason to attempt to do any good anywhere. Inevitably,
a large government sponsored attempt to to good (or
protect its security interests), it is going to result in
any number of real & perceived bad deeds.

If we simply shrug our collective shoulders & continue to
allow the occasional bad deed to be grossly magnified out
of proportion to the real overall good that is
accomplished, we will put ourselves in a tenuous position.

The WOT is going to be a long haul. It absolutely must be
won. We already have widespread opposition from the left
here & abroad. We have a liberal media here, in Europe &
the ME that is an active participant against the Bush
Admin. Most of it actively opposes his actions in the WOT
& wants a return to the utterly failed policies in place
prior to 9/11. And they are not being objective or honest
in what they report to the public day after day.

The WOT is not going to be won if public support for it is
allowed to be manipulated, hyped & distorted by the anti-
war left & a majority of media outlets 24/7. We need to
bring a sense of balance & objectivity to both the good &
the bad or we are going to pay a much higher price in
blood & treasure before the WOT is over.
