I am confident that those who are responsible for the treatment of prisoners will be fully and adequately punished. No whitewash will take place even if anyone thought one was possible or desirable.

I am, however, concerned about the damage the incident will do to whatever budding credibility we are attempting to establish among Arabs. The media play from outfits such as Al Jazeera will make it impossible for us to recover from the damage that has been done, regardless of the apologies Bush and others may make or the punishment meted out to the malefactors.

It's a very, very bad thing, and it's unfortunately going to have a long shelf life.

Ironically, the things done at the prison pale by comparison to what has been done by Saddam to his own population. But that doesn't matter since, obviously, we have taken a moral high ground and are now perceived as hypocrites.

I wonder what can be done to repair the damage. It's a time for creativity. I haven't seen anything worthwhile yet on that front.
