Vietnam was defined by neither jungles nor the Soviet Union. Vietnam, as well as Afghanistan, happened because their are limits to the ability of one nation to impose their will over others who are willing to die for their chosen way of life.

The necessary components of Vietnam are there: an arrogant superpower attempting to exert strategic control over a region for their own purposes, ostensibly for self defense; an indigenous people whose standard of life is so poor that they are willing to die to make things better; an administration that lies so much that they begin to believe their own brand of bullshit; lack of international support for the occupiers.

Bush wanted to outdo his dad; well, I think getting us into this quagmire certainly qualifies. Bush will be remembered by history, but not in the way he'd like to be remembered. His face will be alongside US Grant as the worst President in history.
