I would not forget the Merchant Marine. They perfomed brilliantly and bravely in the face of continuous U boat attacks.
I believe they have been awarded Veteran's benefits though they were not considered a uniform service at that time. They certainly saw enough combat.
I crossed from NYC to Bremerhaven on a WWII troop ship in October 1963...I think it was the USS Patch.
