Well, for a while the average length of employment in silicon valley in the 90s was 9 mos.

I left plenty of options on the table myself, I'm sure many folks that read this thread did also. I think the problem here is that investors tend to look at the home-run type companies like ebay- where if you received options early on it was going to take a crowbar to get you out of there since the payoff was so high. But for most companies, employees would routinely walk away from options that were in the money during the first year if the amount was not really significant, I'd say up to 50K or so, in order to persue that "next big thing" that you just KNEW was going to pay off! LOL

Anyway this is all just little fish compared to the executive packages and proliferation of VPs with no cutback that has happened in these firms. Take a look at the VPs at Brocade (my favorite company to pick on these days)- a company with 1200 employees. 16 VPs, and a strategic advisor (cofounder). Give me a break.
