No the Iranians did have a legally elected government in 1953. The Mossedeq government. We overthrew it and installed the Shah. They finally got angry enough at the Shah and overthrew him. Unfortunately Khomeini was the galvanizing personality behind this coup.

The best thing for us to have done was to eat the nationalization of the oil business that Mossedeq wanted. We could have started to conserve oil then instead of using force and death to maintain our control of it. Conservation results in lower prices and more stability over the long term. Violence and squandering of energy leads to lower prices short term but more instability and higher prices long term.

The entire world would not be in this terrorist situation if we would have supported the democracy in Iran instead of suppressing it for our short term needs. We created a lot of hate. And hate is the breeding ground for terrorists.

I argue that we need a strategic plan for energy competition not the zig zag mess of tactical plans that every administration has persued since 1950.
