Through the looking glass

The ultra-cool 33 Restaurant & Lounge on Stanhope Street may have the most-talked-about restroom signs. People usually pause in the hallway outside before pushing on the door marked M or W, says co-owner Greg Den Herder. Both letters are made from the numeral 3 turned on it side, reflecting a design theme that runs through the restaurant.

Inside, the fun really begins. A glass wall by the men's room door is filled with 3-inch PVC pipes that are cut to two-inch depths. The pipes are stacked in such a way that it is easy to peer through their openings into the women's room.

The restrooms share a wall, into which sinks are built. The sinks are recessed and framed by translucent glass walls, so women washing their hands or touching up their makeup can sneak a peak at the men on the other side, and vice versa.

Rather than finding this open approach off-putting, guests seem to love it. "We did it to bring in a little mystery," says Den Herder. But the mystery stops there. The stall doors in both rooms are solid and black.
