I think it is also important to consider the Ashcroft connection.

Now don't try to say that I said that Ashcroft planned 9/11.
In fact it's the opposite.

Ashcroft was also chosen for his role because he is so incompetent. Cheney knew that he could turn Ashcroft's obsession with pornography into a distraction from counterterrorism just by giving him a green light to search for dirty movies. They get to titilate the religious right, and make sure the FBI is out of the loop with 1 appointment. I'll bet Cheney and Scooter were high-fiving over that one.

Government works as a series of checks and balances so that one person's mistakes cannot result in a colosal failure. The neocons, who controlled appointments, systematicly dismantled thoses checks.
