significant failures

Just reading Atkinson's "An Army at Dawn"... Never realized how "iffy" the North African campaign was...

Every conflict has "significant failures"... And they are usually weighted toward the start (though not always).

The big question is whether modern democracies have the ability to wage long term wars. Will the US public "lean forward" or flinch like the Spanish?

We will see.

I know it's hard to stay resolved when you live in a blue state (which I do and assume you do as well).

BTW, the sort of critical thinking you advocate is exactly what we lose in a Rumsfeld resignation.

TWT, but since he stuck with Tenet I would hope Bush would stick with Rumsfeld.

The problem is the Admin knows Rumsfeld is not likely to play the post departure O'Neil/Clark media circuit game (he's loyal and doesn't need the money)... and that may make him easier to sacrifice... The other risk is he may simply decide he has had enough (though I doubt it).

In any case - losing him would be a loss for the US... politics be damned.

Is giving the Arab public, Howard Dean, and the media what they want (a Rumsfeld resignation) going to win this war?
