The election is about Bush, not Rumsfeld. People are not going to vote against Bush because of Rumsfeld, any more than they are going to vote for Kerry because of Rumsfeld.

The election is between Bush and Kerry.

Realistically, neither one of them is going to win it. But one of them is going to be beaten. Rumsfeld is not going to be a determining factor.

Part of what I sense happening now is that many people have a serious interest in seeing Rumsfeld go down on this issue, because if they can accomplish that, then his entire career is defined by it. All of his positive accomplishments will take a back seat, and his legacy in the media will always be that of an American nazi, an American Saddam. He knows that, Bush knows that.

It serves both of them better to let him clean it up. Ultimately, that sends a stronger, more powerful message.

And Rumsfeld's opponents [and Bush's] know that.
