<<People would walk more, ride bicycles>
My old commute from Redlands, CA to downtown LA was about 65mi each way. Which do you suggest?

Gee Taikun, can't you Americans figure out anything?

Here are some choices for you:

Sell your stupid big SUV and buy a little motorcycle [or bicycle, as it would only be a two hour bicycle ride, which would reduce your tv watching time, which would be a good thing - you'd lose 50 kg too and be healthier]

Move closer to work, which would reduce traffic jams and impedance of other people in their travels. Your bicycle ride would be easier, or you could walk, or take your Segway.

Get a job closer to home, to save the trouble of moving your furniture and stuff, and incurring transaction costs on your home and disruption of your children.

Hitch-hike, offering money to your neighbours to share transport.

Catch a bus or train, or share a taxi with a bunch of people.

Don't work in LA as it's going to be destroyed by the tsunami from a bolide over or into the Pacific. One should sleep and work 100 metres above sea level [preferably 1 km above sea level, such as Las Vegas].

Stop spending money so you only have to go to work 2 days a week, or live on your wife's income.

Get a cyberspace job so you can stay home all day and do no commuting.

Walking that far would be out of the question. I will help you with the arithmetic if you can't work out how long walking would take you to go 80 km. So, don't try walking to work [unless you hitch-hike].

Those are a few suggestions.

Or, you could simply buy the fuel and do away with some other spending.

See, it's all so simple. No problem at all.

Mqurice

PS: Canadians are just Americans with a different passport. Okay, there are a few other differences, but it's hard to tell.
