The alliance is already broken. Intel must look to other markets to regain future
revenue lost to AMD and Cyrix. Success in growing these other markets must hurt
Microsoft, which is tied to the x86 architecture for 95+% of its revenues. NC's are
an example of a market which Intel will enter at Microsoft's expense.

Another example is the loan of intel engineers to Be for several months to port the BeOS to intel.

I doubt Gassee came crawling to intel and they graciously accomodated him. In fact, after Be discontinued its BeBoxen, many people petitioned Be for an intel port. BeBox users and Mac BeOS user discussed the implications on various mailing lists and usenet groups with a fervor bordering on Mac/PC debates. Most didn't seem to want it to happen. Be listens to its users, but must have been presented with a pretty fabulous offer and decided a greater installed base would better serve its community and better ensure its viability and success.

All that to say, intel must have approached Be on this one. A sign that intel no longer feels comfortable that Microsoft alone can provide the growth/sales opportunities intel needs.
