You're not missing anything. Trading thin float, illiquid stocks that are highly manipulated is not my preference. Such stocks can be profitable, with proper entry and exit, and close monitoring. They can pose more of a problem for shorting than options ... but in either case you are so at the mercy of the market makers that it sometimes is not worth the trade. On such stocks, the mm can work around your order ... you are compelled to trade at market. Recall occf ... spreads of 11-14 points during a single trading day. Options spreads were pretty awful too. But to each their own, always.
