The Serbs were defending themselves? Sort of like how the Nazis were defending themselves, eh?

Serbians were the aggressors, and the 'bad guys' (else why would they be the ones being convicted of war crimes?) They fought under the fascade of their Christian culture against the 'Muslim hordes', a fight that goes back centuries. The root of (true) Balkanization IS religion, and the cultural differences that arose from the different religious groups.

And your missing the point on the Crusades and the Inquisition. The point is that they were started under the guise of religion. So many wars and so much killing has happened under the banner of Christianity, it is surprising that it even survived as a religion. Today, a similar hijacking of religion has occurred, only this time it is Islam's turn.

More may have been killed in recent times by godless heathens, but I'd wager not when you factor in all killed during historical religious wars. Crusades, Hundred Years War, genocide in Central and South America, etc. Even if not in real numbers, the percentage of population exterminated was probably greater.

Maybe we should just ban -isms.
