DNA experiment fixes mutant gene

Web posted December 3, 1998

``This is a completely new kind of 21st-century gene therapy,'' said Dr. Jayanta Roy-Chowdhury, a professor of medicine and molecular genetics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx. ``It's remarkable.'' His lab has been the first to succeed in delivering this so-called chimera molecule -- part RNA, part DNA -- into animals and finding that it helped the body correct the defect by replacing a missing piece of the gene.

note> Dr. Roy-Chowdhury was one of the original founders of Multicell Associates.
