I don't think torture and humiliation of Iraqis are the result of moral standard being set too high. I think it is apparent to all the soldiers that the war is based on a lie, and they really resent being over there for less than honorable reasons. They vent their frustration on who they can. The wild shooting into civilian populated neighborhoods are just as much a symptom of this frustration as the actions within the prisons. I recall about a week after the fall of Baghdad that a soldier was killed at the university while standing in line to buy a soda. Someone walked up behind him, placed a gun below his helmet and fired. It seems the U.S. has sought revenge for that action ever since. Not for the murder per/se but for showing plainly and graphicly that there was to be no thanks, no flowers, and no welcome. The soldiers wanted to be the Big Red One rolling into Paris after D-Day with kisses and champaign. Instead they rolled into Hue on the eve of TeT. They are venting. They need to go home. TP
