What are the books that changed our lives? I'm trying to decide which 10 books I would tell my students are "must reads"- right now, this is my list:

How Proust Can Change Your Life
Meditations- Aurelius
Hoffer- the True Believer
The History of Western Philosophy- Russell
The Writings of Epictetus
Grimm's Fairy Tales- a volume as close to the original as possible
The Uses of Enchantment
The Power of Myth (of the more detailed Jospeh Campbell books- the whole set)
The Norton Introduction to Poetry
The Norton Introduction to Literature

Shoot- I would have like to put in the Greek myths, the Norse myths, the Bible as literature (of course Campbell covers this, lightly), some Jung, some Freud, some Camus or Sartre, a LOT of Shakespeare, and some sort of entertaining historical survey- like the Will and Ariel Durant books- which I started reading at around 13 or 14- and found very entertaining.

But it would be cheating to include those :-)

So what 10 books do you think are life changing- and would you recommend to someone else. And would you recommend different books to older people than you would to those of high school age?
