My father served in the 11th, which made it's first contact in what had by then become the "Bastogne salient" on December 30, 1944-the day after his 26th birthday (Fortunately, he lived to be 80.)

In 1968 we went to the theatre to see the now-classic "Battle of the Bulge", which portrayed the Malmedy massacre splendidly. On the way I home mentioned Shirer's footnote (see "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich") about Peiper not getting convicted. He said, "Well. We got 'em back at Bastogne."

War is never chosen. But war requires a certain attitude. No one EVER won a battle by apologizing to the enemy-nor by allowing TRAITORS to serve in the Senate...
