Abuse shots hit Pentagon

Senators call for all pictures to be released

The photograph of a prisoner cowering naked at the gate of his cell in front of two dogs yesterday confronted the Pentagon with what it had been dreading for days - a new wave of images of abuse and sexual sadism at Abu Ghraib prison.
The photograph, published by the New Yorker magazine, highlights the dilemma facing an administration caught between admitting that new pictures exist, and its understandable reluctance to have them published.

Yesterday Democratic and Republican members of Congress urged the Pentagon to turn over its extensive catalogue of mistreatment at the prison.

Pentagon officials say they know of at least two CDs of photographs documenting abuse by US personnel, containing several hundred images.

They are believed to include photographs of US troops beating an Iraqi inmate to the point of unconsciousness, having sex with a female Iraqi prisoner, and gloating over a corpse. There are also photographs of sex between US military personnel.
