ah, thanks all, now I understand why it came up.

as for why Downing left, I didn't, and don't, have any inside information or special knowledge, and haven't heard much since. when the full story of this administration becomes available over time it will be quite interesting, because there are lots of things that are seemingly inexplicable. I mean, the Iraq policy has been such a cock-up from day one that it just doesn't make sense. Even the hawks--hell, especially the hawks--had an interest in making sure this wasn't a fiasco, and yet the admin made obviously stupid choices at each step along the way. I have my own theories about how to explain it, but they're not very good ones, so I'll be curious to see the record...
